A Guide to Your UAMS Health Bill and the Patient Billing Process
Thank you for choosing UAMS Health for your health care. We understand that healthcare billing can be confusing at times. Our goal is to help make paying for your care at UAMS as simple as possible. We hope this information helps answer any questions about your bill.
About Billing and Insurance
Before your hospital visit:
- As a patient, you should know and understand your insurance plan benefits and your responsibility for any deductibles, coinsurance or copayment amount prior to any visit.
- Not all services are covered in all insurance contracts. If your insurance plan does not cover a service or procedure, you may be billed. To find out what your insurance covers and what your financial obligation may be, call the customer service or member service department of your health insurance company.
- Make sure that your health insurance company lists both your doctor and the hospital as participating providers. If you go to an out-of-network provider, you may have a greater financial responsibility.
- When necessary, we will attempt to collect any patient expenses at the point of registration. This request for payment may consist of any deductible, copayment or outstanding balance amounts. We will make every effort to accurately estimate your portion of the bill before you receive services.
- For certain procedures not covered by insurance you may be required to pay a deposit or pay for the services in full prior to your care.
After your visit:
- We will bill your primary health insurance company and, if applicable, your secondary insurance company based on the information provided when you registered.
- Please respond promptly to your insurance company requests for additional information. These requests must be handled before the insurance company can make a payment.
- If your insurance company does not pay the entire bill, we will send you a statement to notify you of any unpaid balance.
- We will not send you a statement until your insurance company has made their payment.
- If you are unable to pay your balance in full, a formal payment plan must be entered into to prevent the account from being assigned to a collection agency.
Financial Assistance for Uninsured and Underinsured Patients
Uninsured Discount Uninsured Arkansas residents will pay a reduced rate for certain services. This rate will be reflected on the patient’s first bill.
Financial Assistance UAMS also provides financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured patients. Income limits are determined by family size and income and are based on 300 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How are my payments applied to my account?
A: If you have a payment plan, any payment will be applied to the payment plan first to keep it in good standing. Payments are next applied to the oldest outstanding balance.
Q: How often will I receive a statement?
A: An individual outstanding balance will appear on four statements, one every 30 days. If no payment is received and/or a formal payment plan has not been established, we will send a letter indicating the balance will be assigned to collection.
